RESTORATIVE PEER MEDIATION

TRAINING STUDENTS AND MAINTAINING A RESTORATIVE PEER MEDIATION PROGRAM IN A LARGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Peer mediation has been around in many schools in varying forms for a long time as a vehicle to skill students in the processes of conflict resolution. When done well, peer mediator programs increase a climate of care and cooperation in schoolyards. For schools implementing restorative practices, bringing restorative skills and understandings to peer mediators is logical.  Peer mediation programs where students are trained in low level Restorative skills can free teachers up to address the more serious problems that arise while peer mediators assist peers with low-level social problems and conflicts by bringing a restorative scaffold to problem solving conversations between younger students.

In this workshop, Christie-Lee Hansberry, teacher and author of “How to do Restorative Peer Mediation in your School” will share her experiences of training senior primary school students to help younger students in a restorative way and the intricacies of maintaining a Restorative Peer Mediation program.
